Cambridge IELTS Book 17 Writing Task 2 Test 1
It is important for people to take risks, both in their professional lives and their personal lives.
Do you think the advantages of taking risks outweigh the disadvantages?
MAIN IDEAS
+ create opportunities [prospects]
+ build resilience
– Danger [hazard]
Taking risks can be essential in both professional and personal aspects of life. In my opinion, the advantages of taking chances outweigh the potential downsides.
The primary benefit of embracing risk is that it opens doors to new opportunities. For instance, taking a chance on a new relationship could lead to finding a life partner, whereas avoiding risks may leave someone stuck in their single life. Likewise, accepting a risky job offer can help advance a career, providing opportunities to gain new knowledge and skills, which in turn could accelerate career progression.
Moreover, taking risks can foster greater resilience. The uncertainty that comes with risk-taking often brings emotional challenges like fear and self-doubt. By confronting these emotions, individuals can become more resilient, which is a valuable trait since change and risk are inevitable in both professional and personal lives.
On the other hand, risk-taking does carry the possibility of negative consequences. The uncertain nature of risks can sometimes lead to harmful outcomes. For example, my nephew invested all his savings into a business venture that ultimately failed, leaving him both bankrupt and jobless. This had devastating consequences for both his career and his marriage.
In summary, I believe the advantages of taking risks outweigh the disadvantages. The potential to create new opportunities and build emotional resilience surpasses the dangers of negative outcomes. Additionally, these risks can be managed by having contingency plans in place for possible failures.
