Biofuel production: How Ethanol is Made
The process diagram illustrates the production of ethanol. Overall, the cyclical process consists of eight steps, beginning with flora absorbing sunlight and CO2, and ending with vehicles releasing carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere, restarting the cycle.
The initial four steps involve preparing raw materials for processing. In the first stage, CO2 and sunlight are absorbed by trees and plants. Then, a tractor collects the foliage, which is sent to a shredder for pre-processing. The shredder produces cellulose, which is forwarded to a facility for further processing.
Processing begins by converting the cellulose into sugar molecules, and when microbes are added, ethanol is produced. This ethanol is then utilized in the transportation industry, powering cars, trucks, and planes. These vehicles, running on ethanol, emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, allowing photosynthetic organisms to absorb it, thus continuing the cycle.
