Cambridge IELTS Book 18 Writing Task 2 Test 2
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Some tertiary students prefer to study subjects outside their primary area of focus, while others choose to concentrate entirely on their major to obtain their qualifications. This essay examines both viewpoints and explains why I believe it is crucial to focus exclusively on one’s major field of study.
Proponents of studying a variety of subjects argue that this approach can be highly beneficial. The main reason is that engaging with multiple disciplines enhances critical thinking by exposing students to different perspectives and problem-solving techniques. This diverse academic exposure fosters creativity and helps students think more flexibly when addressing challenges. Furthermore, exploring subjects beyond their major can lead students to discover new interests or passions, making their academic journey more fulfilling. By broadening their horizons, students can gain a more well-rounded education, which contributes to personal growth and intellectual development.
On the other hand, many students believe that focusing solely on their major is more advantageous. First, dedicating all efforts to their primary area of study enables them to gain a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. This in-depth focus helps students master complex concepts and develop specialised skills that are highly sought after in their chosen profession. Additionally, by concentrating exclusively on their major, students can maximise their academic performance, as they are not distracted by other subjects. This focused learning allows them to excel in their field and achieve the highest levels of academic success.
In conclusion, while studying a broad range of subjects can be beneficial, I strongly believe that focusing entirely on one’s major is of greater importance. This approach enables students to gain a deep understanding and expertise in their field, which is crucial for success in both academia and their future careers. Though exploring other areas of interest may provide personal enrichment, a focused academic approach is the key to mastering a chosen discipline and achieving excellence.
