IELTS 17 Test 1 Writing Task 1.

Norbiton industrial area now

Planned future development

The maps illustrate the current layout of an industrial area to the east of Norbiton and the proposed redevelopment plans. Overall, the redevelopment aims to transform the area into a residential neighborhood, complete with new housing and essential amenities. Presently, the area features a roundabout connecting a southern and eastern road, surrounded by several factories slated for removal in the redevelopment process.

The region along the eastern road is set to become a residential area, with housing planned along the route, a school at the far end, and a playground located to the north. Additionally, a new road will be constructed heading north from the roundabout, crossing over a river, with housing lining the western side of this road. The farmland north of the river will be replaced by more housing, with a road running parallel to the river that connects to the newly-built northbound road.

Plans also include the construction of another road branching northwest from the roundabout, with housing to be built along one side and at the road’s end. To the southwest of the roundabout, new shops are set to be developed, while a medical center is planned for the southeast. Furthermore, a second roundabout will be added where the southern road currently meets the main road at a T-junction. (207 Words)

Tense

  • Will: It expresses a degree of certainty and therefore isn’t suitable for describing planned development. The trouble with the word “plan” is that it can be just an idea that has not yet advanced to the stage of being definite.
  • Be going to: You can use it but don’t overuse it because it’s informal.
  • Be+to+verb: It’s formal and is used for telling planned or scheduled events Example: Some housing is to be built.
  • Be Planned to: Some housing is planned to be built.
  • There are plans: There are plans to build some housing.
